    WIXOE, or Whixoe in 1844, is a small village and parish on the north bank of the river Stour, 4 miles W.S.W. of Clare, and E.S.E. of Haverhill, has only 164 souls, and about 600 acres of land. J. P. Elwes, Esq., is lord of the manor, but part of the soil belongs to Mrs. Jardine and J. Nottidge, Esq., who have neat houses here. The Church is a small ancient structure, and the benefice is a discharged rectory, valued in K.B. at 5. 13s. ]d., and in 1835, at 180. J. P. Elwes, Esq., is patron, and the Rev. Frederick Elwes, B.A., incumbent. The latter has a neat residence, and the other principal inhabitants are Joshua A. Fitch, corn miller and farmer, Water Mill; Mrs. Elizabeth Jardine ; Joshua Nottidge, Esq., Rose Hill; and Mrs. Elizabeth Payne, Water Hall.
